About

Ngomakurira is a granite mountain near Domboshawa with rock art, caves and wide views from the top. It suits reasonably fit hikers after a proper half-day outing close to Harare, as well as climbers. It is rated 4.6 from around 120 Google reviews.

Hikers describe a steep start that levels out further up. One pair of first-timers took just over an hour and a half to reach the top, including a detour to the rock art first. A signposted fork splits the route: one arm goes to the beacon and caves, the other to the paintings. One reviewer warns that turning left past the rock art leads to a section needing proper climbing gear, while the right-hand route stays a hike.

Regulars like how quiet it usually is, the sunsets, and the forest patches in the valleys between the outcrops. One visitor saw baboons on the way up.

Two practical notes come up. Take plenty of water, especially in summer. And the signposting could be better, so pay attention at junctions.

“My favourite hiking place! It's definitely a work out but once you make it to the top it makes it all worthwhile. The views are breathtaking, each time I've gone it's been nice and quiet. Great for photos and to watch the sunset, remember to carry lots of fluids though…”

“Beautiful vistas. You can walk or drive up depending which part of the mountain you climb. Lovely forest patches in the canyons and valleys between the granite outcrops.”

“Very interesting hike, with amazing views and spectacular rock formations. It is quite a steep hike at first but it evens out later on. Definitely a good spot for rock climbers, and hikers alike. Once you reach the rock art, if you go left it has a bit more hike and then ends up…”
