Victoria Falls is the one place in Zimbabwe that needs no introduction, and the one most often sold as a package. The Zambezi drops into a basalt gorge along a front more than a kilometre and a half wide, and the spray rises high enough to be seen from a long way off — which is where the older name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders, comes from. The town itself is small and built around the visitor: the rainforest walk, the bridge, the sunset cruises and the game drives are all within a short transfer of each other. That makes it easy to do a lot in three nights, and easy to spend more than you planned if you book each activity on arrival rather than in advance.

Best time to visit

The Falls are at their fullest between about February and May, after the rains have worked their way down the Zambezi. That is the spectacle everyone photographs, but the spray is heavy enough to soak you and to hide the gorge on the Zimbabwean side. From roughly September to December the river is low, more rock is visible, and the water-based activities — rafting, the pools on the Zambian side — come into their own. The middle months, June to August, are the compromise most visitors prefer: good flow, clear views and cool mornings.

Getting there from Harare

Victoria Falls is a long drive from Harare — most operators run it overnight or break the journey — and a short flight. The escorted packages on this page include return transport from Harare in the price, which is usually the simplest option for a group. If you would rather drive yourself, the route runs through Bulawayo or via Hwange, and you can pick up a car with one of the hire companies in the directory. Once you are in town, transfers between the hotels and the activities are short, and most operators include them.

Victoria Falls questions

How many nights do I need?

Three nights is the usual length and fits the main activities comfortably. Two works if you are flying and know what you want to do. Longer stays tend to add Chobe, Hwange or a rafting day.

Is it cheaper to book activities as part of a package?

Often, yes — packages bundle the cruise, Falls tour and a game drive at a group rate. Booking activities individually gives you more choice; the activity rates on this page show what the separate items cost.

Do I need a passport to see the Falls?

Not for the Zimbabwean side. You do need one to cross the bridge into Zambia or to take a day trip into Botswana, and border formalities apply on both.

Can school groups be catered for?

Yes — several operators quote reduced per-learner rates for the rainforest tour, boat cruises, game drives and elephant interactions. The school-trip rates on this page are one example.

What should I budget on top of the package price?

Park entry for the rainforest, any activity not listed in the inclusions, tips and meals that fall outside the plan. Check the inclusions on each deal carefully — they vary a lot between operators.
