Nyanga is the cold, green corner of Zimbabwe — pine plantations, trout dams, bare granite and more water falling off more cliffs than anywhere else in the country. It is the Eastern Highlands at their most walkable: Mount Nyangani, the highest point in Zimbabwe, is a half-day climb from the car park, and the falls at Mtarazi and Nyangombe are both short walks from a road. It is also the easiest proper getaway from Harare, which is why almost every operator sells a Nyanga weekend. Bring a jumper. People who pack for Zimbabwe rather than for Nyanga regret it by the first evening.

Best time to visit

April to September gives you the clearest air and the best walking, with cold nights — genuinely cold in June and July, frost on the higher ground some mornings. The rains from November to March make the waterfalls spectacular and the paths slippery, and mist can close in on Nyangani with very little warning. Spring, from late August into October, is the sweet spot for a first visit: warm days, cool evenings and the water still running well.

Getting there from Harare

Nyanga is an easy drive from Harare on the Mutare road, turning north before Rusape, and it is comfortably done in a morning. Every escorted package on this page includes return transport, which is the usual way groups do it. Driving yourself is straightforward — the main roads are tarred — though the last stretches to some of the camps and dams are dirt, and a higher vehicle helps after rain. Car hire companies in the directory cover the route.

Nyanga highlights

  • Mount Nyangani, the highest point in Zimbabwe, climbed from the car park in a morning
  • Mtarazi Falls, the highest waterfall in the country, with a skywalk and zipline nearby
  • Nyangombe Falls and the natural pools below them
  • Trout dams and the fishing around Rhodes and Mare
  • The pit structures and terraces left across the hillsides by earlier farming communities
  • World's View, looking out over the Honde Valley

Nyanga questions

How long does it take to climb Mount Nyangani?

Most walkers are up and back within half a day. It is a steep but non-technical walk. Mist comes down fast on the summit and people have got lost there, so go with someone who knows it, tell someone your plan, and turn back if the cloud closes in.

Is Nyanga good in winter?

Very — clear skies and quiet trails — but it is cold. Nights below freezing happen in June and July, and not every place to stay has heating. Pack accordingly.

Can you do Nyanga in a weekend from Harare?

Yes. It is the standard two-night trip: leave Friday, walk and see the falls on Saturday, head home Sunday. Most of the packages on this page are built exactly that way.

What is there for people who don't want to hike?

The falls, the pools and World's View are all short walks from parking. There is trout fishing, horse riding at some of the lodges, and the zipline and skywalk near Mtarazi for anyone wanting a view without the climb.
