About

Ewanrigg Botanical Gardens is a National Parks-run garden outside Harare, known for its aloes and suited to a quiet day trip with a picnic or a braai. It holds a 4.1 rating from 108 Google reviews, and visitors find it lovely but tired.

The aloes are the reason to go. One visitor calls it one of the largest aloe collections in the world, and another who went while they were flowering found them wonderful. After a long dry spell the plants are less showy, though one reviewer still found plenty worth seeing and spotted a hamerkop and a pied kingfisher from the small restaurant, which served good food. Another puts the gardens about 45 kilometres from Harare, found the toilets clean, and stayed on for sunset photographs.

Upkeep is the recurring theme. Several reviewers describe the place as run down and in need of care, one found the roads poor in places, and a pair who visited on a weekday afternoon in March had the grounds to themselves. Expect to pay an entrance fee per person on arrival.

“Ewanrigg Gardens is about 20km from Shamva toll gate, or 45km from Harare. It's perfect distance for a day trip and is run by the National Parks & Wildlife organisation. Ewanrigg has the 2nd largest collection of aloes in the world, some thing you would never know unless you go…”

“My friend and I came on a Thursday, mid-afternoon in March. Not a single soul was around except for the workers. Everything is pretty much exactly as the Rhodesians left it, decaying day by day. This park was opened in 1950 and declared a National Park in 1960, the land was…”

“This is the best time of the year to visit Ewanrigg as the aloes are just wonderful. The Zimparks have a restaurant near the top of the hill and it serves a widerange of meals at most reasonable prices. The bar is well stocked and you can get cool drinks as well as teas.”
