About

Harare Botanical Gardens, on Sandringham Drive, holds trees from different parts of Zimbabwe and beyond, along with a herbarium that Google says contains around 500,000 plant specimens. Rated 3.9 from 713 Google reviews, it suits picnics, long walks, photo shoots and school trips.

People who love it talk about greenery and space. One regular calls it a favourite for picnics and nature walks, and says the restaurant, closed for a while, has been brought back. A visitor with a project team was shown the gardens and the herbarium by a knowledgeable staff member, and found a desert section and one for economically important plants alongside the regional trees. It is also used for outdoor events and large gatherings.

The gardens show their age. Reviewers mention dry grass, trees that have lost their name labels, and a glasshouse one visitor found neglected and sad to see. The irrigation has had problems, although one recent reviewer says it has been repaired. Benches are scarce, so bring a blanket or something to sit on, and one visitor wished for guided tours to make more of the collection.

“Nice place to hold an outdoor event or hang out with friends. Most of the trees have lost their labels, so you can't tell their names, but it is still a great place to take a walk. My advice is to bring a picnic blanket or something to sit on, as there aren't many benches.”
