About

Mukuvisi Woodlands is a nature reserve inside Harare, entered off Hillside Road, with game, birds and walking trails a short drive from the city centre. It suits families, dog walkers and anyone who wants a morning in the bush without leaving town.

Walkers are well served. One reviewer counts four hiking routes from 3km to 10km, most of them easy and open to dogs on a lead, and another says the trails lead down to a river. Near the viewing platform visitors have seen zebra, impala, eland and giraffe, the giraffe keeping to the tree line, and with good timing you can watch the animals being fed. There is horse riding, a curio shop, braai spots among the trees and a small café whose coffee and burgers get good words, though the menu is short. Staff are described as knowledgeable, and one visitor called the place an open-air classroom, with information on birds, animals and fungi.

The weak spots are upkeep and exhibits. One visitor found the bird hide overgrown, with reeds blocking the windows, and another thought the caged exhibits thin. Game tends to gather near the platform rather than along the trails, so don't expect sightings on every walk. Rated 4.2 from nearly 1,700 Google reviews.

“Very nice park in the middle of the city with great hiking trails. We saw Elands and a herd of impalas, next to many different bird species, especially around the restaurant where good coffee and burgers are served.”
