About
Silozwane Cave sits high on a granite hill in the Matobo area, near Silozwane village. It holds one of the richest rock art panels in the hills. It suits walkers who are happy to scramble, and people with a real interest in San paintings.
The visitors who made it up are clear that it was worth the effort. One describes well-preserved paintings of giraffes, lions and human figures at leisure, plus a snake with an antelope's head. That visitor called it the most worthwhile thing they saw in two days in the park. Another enjoyed the wide views from the top of the hill.
Getting there is the hard part. One group drove a low-clearance car on a rough dirt road after heavy rain, and passengers had to get out and guide it through. They advise a 4x4, which can get closer to the forest at the foot of the hill. The final climb is short and steep, over bare rock.
The cave is also hard to find. Two reviewers say they would not have reached it without local help. So arrange a guide at Pomongwe before you set out. There are no toilets or other facilities on site, so allow plenty of time and carry what you need.
