About

Silwane Nature Reserve lies off Glenville Drive in Bulawayo and has two main areas: a dam and, further along, a waterfall. It suits nature lovers and anyone interested in conservation who wants a guided walk without leaving the city.

Reviewers who got the full tour were impressed. One describes grassland, woodland, a gorge, a high camping area and an evergreen forest with picnic spots by a slow river, with rangers explaining how fire and people have shaped the land. The waterfall and the gorge walk are singled out, and one visitor enjoyed the braai on weekends. Another found it a good place for private functions.

There are real drawbacks. According to one visitor, the dam is polluted by raw sewage and covered in water hyacinth for much of the year. Getting around is confusing: one group got lost and missed the activities they came for, and another notes that directions send you to the dam, with the waterfall less than ten kilometres further on. Get clear directions before you set off. It is rated 3.9 from 65 Google reviews.
